Keeping Your Laptop Safe

April 5th, 2009

I’ve been switching laptops for as long as I can remember. I realize I’ve senselessly been spending thousands of dollars almost once a year to get one device after another. I’m not so good at maintaining items or fiddling with gadgets, so I never really spent much time trying to extend my laptop’s life longer than anticipated. The problem was, I was keeping it far shorter than what the manufacturer expected. There was one time when I only owned the thing for a week and was carelessly making coffee a foot away. The rest is history.

I talked to a friend of mine who happened to be a computer whiz and got some very effective tips and tricks in maintaining my laptop for years to come. I quickly discovered the positive results, such as significantly longer lifespan. My laptop today is over 4 years old and still running very efficiently. Here are some tips that spread wider than the regular need for Laptop briefcases.

1. Cleanliness is key. It is important to keep your laptop clean at all times. If it is not in use, make sure you close it tightly to keep dust and other debris from moving in between the keys. It is important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before working on the computer to prevent dirt from sticking. Also make it a habit to wipe the whole device with a clean dry cloth. Do not push too hard and never use anything wet on the screen.

2. Traveling with a laptop. Make sure that you place your laptop in a very secure container when traveling. There’s this Briefcase for women that I saw which effectively locks the laptop in place with some extra space for your clothes to sandwich it in between. This way, your laptop stays compact and safe even if your means of transportation is a bit wobbly or shaky. Try to look for quality containers that will fasten your laptop very well and keep it secure even if some accidents happen like falls. You may want to invest in a Rolling briefcase

3. Software protection. As much as you should protect the exterior of your laptop, you should also keep the programs and other internal devices secure. There are plenty of viruses and spyware now in media devices and the internet, which is why you should invest in a good and reliable antivirus and anti-spyware program. You can download free versions online. There are also full scale versions available in software shops at very affordable prices. Ensure that the program has a security code to get all the full benefits and features.

4. Hardware maintenance. You can hire a professionalto do this for you. Run a test setup to check which hardware needs repair or upgrades. It will be much cheaper to upgrade some items in your laptop instead of buying a brand new one. You will find that you can get a year or two more by upgrading every now and then.
